DIY Essential Oil-Infused play dough / No cook DIY play dough
My preschoolers and my son love to play with Play-Doh. They love rolling it, cutting it, create things with it and of course… mixing colours, crumbling it and making a huge mess! At some point I had to put all that Play-Doh away both in my classroom and my household because I ended up with chunks of dry brownish dough that was stuck either on the carpet or under our shoes. Then I discovered this recipe: DIY play dough infused with essential oils. It was a game changer. You get a larger quantity, it is cheaper, it makes a good activity when you are introducing a new colour to your preschoolers, PLUS it involves measuring, pouring and stirring, which are great for preschoolers to learn. Most importantly, it lasts longer and I can make a batch of the same colour and change it every month. Adding a few drops of therapeutic grade essential oils in our play dough also supports the emotional aspect of their development. My favourite ones to use are:
-Lavender and Chamomile, for their calming properties
-Cedarwood and Frankincense, which are great grounding oils and supportive to children with certain neurological disorders.
-Peppermint, which promotes concentration and alertness
I only use ‘Young Living’ as it is the ONLY brand I trust that is SAFE for our children.
Below, is my no-cook DIY play dough recipe! Enjoy!
Homemade Play Dough Recipe
* 1 cup of flour
* ¼ cup of salt
* ½ cup of water (warm)
* 1 Tbs of vegetable oil
* 3 to 5 drops of natural food colouring
* 5-10 drops ‘Young Living’ Essential Oils
- Mix the flour and the salt together.
- Mix the ½ cup of warm water with the food colouring.
- Slowly pour the water into the flour mixture, stirring as you pour. Stir until combined, then knead with your hands until the flour is completely absorbed. If the dough is too sticky, add more flour until it doesn’t stick at all.
- Store in the refrigerator to keep it firm.
